  • McGilvra off to a running start
    On Oct. 17, students, teacher and parents braved the rain to run laps around the McGilvra Elementary School in what is one of our most important fundraisers of the year: the annual McGilvra Run-A-Thon. 
  • The Seattle Fire Department is partnering with the Seattle Public Library for a reading program aimed at increasing literacy and raising awareness of home fire safety.  
  • Summer marked its unofficial close as schools returned to session in early September. Kids slowly expel the remains of summer vivacity and are finding their sense of balance with homework and earlier bedtimes. School changes the pace of our community. 
  • Got a tough homework assignment? The Seattle Public Library offers free, in-person and online educational assistance for students of all ages and levels. 
  • Seattle Public Schools will host its first Memorial Football Classic this weekend at Memorial Stadium (401 Fifth Ave. N.) to raise funds for athletics transportation.  
  • Children, teens, parents and caregivers are invited to the School Your Parents event at the Douglass-Truth Library (2300 E. Yesler Way) on Sept. 16, from 5 to 7 p.m. 
  • PAWS AND REFLECT | Learning to read with the help of therapy dogs
    The first day of school can often bring forth understandable jitters. Sometimes, however, the most daunting task a child can face during the school year is to read aloud in front of their peers.

  • Final deadline approaching for McGilvra bricks
    Due to continued interest, Sept. 4 is the extended (and likely final) opportunity to purchase a commemorative Centennial Paver brick to celebrate the first 100 years of McGilvra Elementary School (1617 38th Ave. E.). No orders will be accepted after Sept. 4. 
  • Seattle Parks and Recreation will sell low-cost life jackets from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 16, at Evans Pool (7201 E. Green Lake Drive N.). This is the last sale of the season. 
  • Students will return to Seattle Girls’ School (SGS, 2706 S. Jackson St.) to see new faces and new programs. 
  • Windermere Real Estate’s Madison Park office (4015 E. Madison St.) is collecting shoes from Aug. 1 through 15 for its “Kicks for Kids” campaign. 
  • McGilvra Elementary School (1617 38th Ave. E.) may be out on summer break, but its PTA is still hard at work planning the events that help the school run. 
  • Sweetwater School (308 Dewey Place E.), a new preschool in Madison Valley, will open this fall under the direction of Patricia Overy, founder of The Valley School, also in Madison Valley. 
  • The Seattle School Board will hold a special meeting at 4:15 p.m. tonight (Friday, July 18) to select an interim superintendent to lead the district for the next year. It may vote to approve a contract during the meeting. 
  • The Landmarks Preservation Board will consider nomination of McGilvra Elementary School at its meeting on Sept. 3 at 3:30 p.m. in the Seattle Municipal Tower, on the 40th Floor, in Room 4060.
