Hopscotch CD (www.hopscotchcd.com) returns this year on Saturday, Aug. 23, with more than 40 community groups, businesses and neighbors taking part in the 2.9 miles of new hopscotch paths across the Central District.

It took more than 400 pounds of cornstarch and four days to get through the neighborhood, where the giant hopscotch course connects the main business districts of the Central District and passes many of the neighborhood’s parks, schools, and institutions.

Highlights of the day include another attempt to break the Guinness Book of World Records’ for the most people hopscotching at the same time (1 p.m., at Centerstone, at 18th Avenue and Cherry Street), and the carnival, sponsored by the Central District Association, which will feature the Garfield High School Jazz Band, fire trucks, a beer garden and more at 23rd Avenue and East Union Street from 4 to 8 p.m.

The hopscotch path will also connect to the “Sense of Place” Ethiopian Summer Festival at Garfield Community Center (2323 E. Cherry St.).
